Is Your Company Making You Fat?
At many companies, it’s hard for employees to get any exercise. They’re forced to sit at desks and conference room tables all day, working such long hours that they don’t have a prayer of sneaking out to the gym or getting there after work. Meanwhile, they are surrounded by vending machines stocked with junk food and soda.
Not so at Salo, a 350-person financial consulting firm in Minneapolis. After participating in a small Mayo Clinic study that looked at the health effects of using treadmill desks and having standing meetings, Gwen Martin, a director at Salo, and the co-founders were eager to do more. During the 2008 study, the employees, who rotated usage of treadmill desks, all lost weight–and productivity and revenues at the firm reached a peak.
